Organic vs Conventional Produce for Buyers
Organic and conventional produce are not simply two versions of the same purchase. Supply depth, pack availability and planning lead time all behave differently.
Supply depth
Organic acreage on most commodities is smaller than conventional, so a weather event or a regional gap tightens organic supply faster and for longer. Substitutions are also harder to find on short notice.
Seasonality and regions
Organic windows often differ from conventional on the same commodity because the growing regions and shippers are not identical. Assume you need to plan organic programs earlier.
Pack and label considerations
- Pack options can be narrower on organic
- Organic product must stay separated and identified through handling
- Labeling and identity preservation matter at every touch point
How to ask for organic
Note organic explicitly on your request, state whether conventional is an acceptable substitute, and give a wider lead time than you would for conventional. Certification questions should be directed to our sales team, which will confirm what applies to a specific shipper.
